Hood
It needs to be broken in. The more I use it, the more I like it.

Tunnel is best solution for wind
Tunnel hoods solve all of the usual problems of face masks/balaclavas: collecting moisture from breath, freezing up, and caussing chapped skin or fogging goggles/glasses.
This is a nice solution for adding a tunnel hood to any jacket or parka. It is not lightweight or pocketable, but it is bomber. -
Alaska Tested - Toasty Warm
I received this just a couple days before we got our first day of the season with temps in the negative double digits. I had to walk some distance when it was -21 F in the morning, and with only a Navy issue wool watch cap on my head underneath this hood, my noggin stayed plenty warm and toasty.
The only issue I might have with it is that it would be nice if there were pull tabs to help unsnap the shoulder straps when trying to take it off. Other than that, the X-Large had enough room (I normally wear a size 7-1/4 to 7-1/2 hat) with my watch cap on. We don't get much wind where I'm at, just north of Fairbanks, AK due to all of the trees, so that's not much of an issue (though could be elsewhere), so I can get by with having the fur trim folded back. Maybe next month when the temps get down to -30 F to -40 F, I might have to pull the trim forward. It fit great over a fleece sweatshirt and a thick fleece pull-over worn under my M-65 field coat. I quickly found that I could get by without zipping up the hood, which allowed me to easily pull it off my head when I went inside somewhere. The material is still a bit stiff since it's new, though it should soften up a bit with use. This is a lot better than the hard-to-find button-on winter hood the M-65 field coat, so I'm happy. Basically, it turns my field coat into a parka, giving some extra range of wearing conditions. I got the one with the genuine coyote fur -- real fur is the only thing that works well in the extreme cold of the sub-Arctic and Arctic. Overall, this is a great buy if you want to keep your head and face warm in extreme cold (btw, the record low temp in Alaska was -80 F, so yeah, it can get pretty dang cold here). -
Parka hood
I use this in combination with my field jacket and liner for cold weather. Its 1000 times better than the cheap hood the field jacket comes with. It'll pay for itself after a winter in Michigan.

The real deal
This is a serious hood! Comfortable, warm enough for the coldest conditions you cannot beat the wolf fur trim. I wanted a detachable hood to coexist with my hoodless down coat. I now feel ready to explore the Arctic.
They seem to run a little on the small side - I would size up if in doubt. My hat size is in the ballpark of a large and I got the large and it fits great. -
Excellent shore hoods for any Christian prepper Amen!
As a Christian prepper I want my GENUINE SURPLUS MILITARY ISSUE EXTREME COLD WEATHER SHORE PARKA HOOD (A-1) to be the best
and the Alpha Industries gear have opened my eyes to how awesome they are. Daily stay repentant (stop sinning and become born again with the Holy Spirit's supernatural self-control power in Jesus Christ), in your heart for Jesus and be ready for any weather as well Amen. John 3:16-18 (waterproofBible.com and righteousgrunt.com both have 100% positive reviews on you tube). This specific extra large size is very rare because this is the only place on the internet that had these for sale.
Here are the many excellent selling points that most surplus stores DO NOT have:
These shore hoods are DISCONTINUED and are NOT being produced for the United States Military anymore.
Also the XL size is 7 3/8 to 7/12 measurements are bigger than the size large's 7 1/8 to 7 1/4, that are typically sold on ebay and the web.
And these XL's are made by Alpha industries, one of the most trusted brands in U.S.G.I military contract clothing producers.
